  • Pedometer tracks your steps

A pedometer counts the number of steps you take, up to 99,999 steps!  The monitor has a lever arm inside that senses the up and down motion of your hip.  It won’t record non-weight bearing activity, like bicycling.  Using a pedometer is a great way to track your daily activity, and to motivate you to be more active.  Get active, Stay active!

Attach it to your belt, pants, skirt, or underwear.  The pedometer will not work right if it is in your pocket or attached to your shoe. Should be worn over your knee (halfway between your belly button and your hip bone).  If your belly is in the way, try placing it closer to your hip. You may want to use a piece of string and a safety pin to attach your step-counting device to your clothing so it doesn’t fall off and break or get lost. Omron hj-112 is one of the most popular step counters but it's much more than that, it measures the distance walked and makey you wanna walk more!

You might have heard of the ‘10,000 steps a day’ media campaign for heart disease prevention and weight maintenance.  10,000 steps is about 5 miles.  People’s stride length varies, but the average number of steps in a mile is 2,000.  Children cover about 2,500 steps in a mile, so 10,000 steps for a child is about 4 miles.  The President’s Council on Physical Fitness and Sports sponsors an active lifestyle award for both adults and children.  To earn the award, adults must reach 10,000 steps; girls must reach 11,000 steps; and boys must reach 13,000 steps.

To get started, find out how many steps you take each day, on average by:  recording the number of steps you take each day for three days.  Add the three days together, and divide the total number by three.  Now you have a baseline from which you can set short and long-term goals.  Start adding steps each day and each week, and gradually work your way up to 10,000+ steps a day! Just start walking and using pedometers. I guarantee you won't be able to stop once you get going.
